Name your essential loads
List lights, fans, router, billing terminal, cameras and other equipment, with rated watts and intended runtime. Motors, pumps and compressors need special attention because startup demand can exceed running demand.
Capacity and runtime are different
The inverter rating concerns the load it can supply. Battery energy affects how long it can supply that load. Neither the VA label nor the battery Ah number alone tells you the full answer.
A practical selection process
Review waveform, battery voltage and chemistry, charging settings, protection, ventilation and local service support. Sensitive equipment may need a dedicated UPS with a suitable transfer characteristic.
- Prepare a load schedule.
- Agree what stays off during an outage.
- Confirm battery and inverter compatibility in writing.
- Document recharge expectations and warranty conditions.
Plan for your next change
If solar is a future goal, discuss that at the first survey. A standard inverter cannot automatically be treated as a solar hybrid simply because a panel is added.
