Backup essentials

Plan inverter backup around essential loads

Decide what must keep running before choosing an inverter or battery. A product rating alone cannot promise a runtime.

Build an essential-load list

INGAA planning worksheet: list each appliance, quantity, nameplate power and the hours you want to use it during an outage. Separate lighting, fans, internet and billing equipment from heating appliances and large motors. Ask a qualified designer to account for starting demand, inverter limits and the actual battery configuration.

  • Identify the smallest useful backup circuit first.
  • Include the router and recorder if remote CCTV matters.
  • Record which appliances must not be connected to backup.

Compare complete systems

Battery storage can support electricity use after solar generation falls, but the result depends on the chosen equipment and controls. Treat quoted runtime as an estimate with a stated load. Ask the supplier to demonstrate the agreed operating scenario at handover and provide an understandable shutdown and fault-reporting guide.

  • Confirm continuous output, battery compatibility and warranty conditions.
  • Ask what happens when the battery reaches its reserve limit.
  • Have circuit selection and installation handled professionally.
