Design CCTV around the detail you need to see

Camera count and megapixels are only part of the decision. Start with the entrance, activity or evidence the system must capture.

Define the viewing task

The ESSCI CCTV qualification starts with the site and customer requirement. Use that same principle when buying: distinguish a wide overview from a view intended to show useful detail at an entrance. Ask to see examples under the lighting conditions that matter, including darkness, backlighting and weather exposure.

  • Mark entrances, vulnerable areas and recording priorities on a plan.
  • Discuss cable routes, recorder location and power backup.
  • Agree who may view live and recorded video.

Test the outcome

INGAA acceptance checklist: walk through the planned views with the installer. Check day and night footage, timestamps, playback and export before signing off. Demonstrate an event search using a sample recording. Set an appropriate retention target and have the supplier show how storage capacity and recording settings support it.

  • Include privacy masking where a view extends beyond the intended area.
  • Verify what continues recording when the internet fails.
  • Keep camera names meaningful, such as front gate or loading bay.
